HIV infected men are living longer thanks to anti-HIV drugs. That’s where the good news ends. Anal cancer rates have soared 5900% among HIV people than the general population a study in the Annals of Medicine reports. Hodgkin’s disease is 1800% more prevalent in the community compared to the general population and liver cancer is seven hundred percent more common.
The study followed 55,000 men and women with HIV which causes AIDS. The study also showed an increase in other cancers as well:
- lung cancer was 3.6 times more common
- throat cancer was 3 times more common
- skin cancer was 3 times more common
- melanoma was 3 times more common
- colorectal cancer was 2.4 times more common
The study did find that there was a slightly smaller chance of prostate cancer that researchers are saying may be because the men also had low testosterone levels. The latest research has discredited this theory, because higher levels of testosterone do not cause prostate cancer, thought the study did not note this information.
Did they ask if the drug therapy was causing the cancer?
